EMERGENCY MANAGEMENT DIRECTOR AND
DEPUTY DIRECTOR VACANCIES
The town of Pittsfield is seeking volunteers to be appointed
by the Board of Selectmen to the positions of Emergency
Management Director and Deputy Emergency Management
Director. The Director, with the Deputy Director assisting,
plans organizes and directs the Emergency Management
programs for the town, acts as the community representative
on all Emergency Management matters and coordinates the
activities of the local Emergency Management Agency with
other local, State, Federal, non-profit and private
agencies. Interested persons should complete a
Volunteer Application Form which can be
downloaded from the town’s website, or a copy of the form
can be acquired at the Selectmen’s Office at the Town Hall,
85 Main Street, Pittsfield, N.H. 03263. Forms must be
completed and submitted to the Selectmen’s Office no later
than February 18, 2010.
BOSTON POST CANE
The Boston Post Cane
was the brainchild of Edwin A. Grozier, publisher of the now
defunct Boston Post, a large circulation newspaper.
In 1909 he sent gold-headed canes to the Board of Selectmen
in 700 towns throughout New England. Likely the idea was to
publicize his newspaper. Manufactured by J. F. Fradley Co.,
the canes had a 14-carat head with the inscription,
“Presented by the Boston Post to the oldest citizen of [the
town’s name]”. The selectmen were asked to present it to the
oldest person in town, as long as they remained there, and
upon death, pass it on to the subsequent oldest person.
Unlike many towns,
Pittsfield retains its original cane. To avoid losing it, in
1999 the select board asked Paul Richardson to make a case
so that it could be properly displayed in the town office.
Six replicas were purchased and are now given to the oldest
person to keep permanently. Bertha Hammen received the first
one in 2003.
Through the years the
cane has been passed along intermittently. There have been
times when it was returned but not given out for several
years. Unfortunately the town does not have a list of the
persons to whom it has been given. Pittsfield Historical
Society Historian Larry Berkson is putting together a list
and would appreciate receiving any information about
recipients. He can be reached at
larryberkson@comcast.net or (603) 798-3984.
New Pittsfield School District Website
The new
Pittsfield School District website -
http://pittsfield-nh.com/sau/ - became operational in
early January. School district residents are encouraged to
visit the new website to keep informed about Pittsfield’s
schools.
Parents
will be interested to know that the website includes basic
day-to-day information, such as the school district
calendar, school lunch menus, and contact information for
school and SAU administrative staff.
On snowy
mornings, students and parents can log on early to find out
if school will be open or closed. Information about and
links to community events – such as Pittsfield’s upcoming
Winterfest – can also be found on the website.
Looking
ahead to the annual school district meeting on March 12,
town voters will find information on the school district’s
proposed budget that includes a summary of changes, brief
explanation of warrant articles, and cost comparisons to
last year and this year.
New information
is being added each month. Students, parents, and all
residents will find the district website -
http://pittsfield-nh.com/sau/ - a convenient way to stay
current with school events.
