PLANETARIUM  PASSES  IN  PITTSFIELD

Courtesy photo by Leslie Vogt:  Pictured left to right:  Mrs. Hammen’s son: Peter G. Hammen, his wife Ruth G. Hammen, and Josiah Carpenter Library Director Rozalind J. “Roza” Benoit.

A memorial donation of Christa McAuliffe Planetarium library Passes have been presented to the Josiah Carpenter Library in Pittsfield by Peter G. and Ruth E Hammen, Peter A. and Kathy Hammen, Christian and Jennifer Hammen, and Dottie McKoan.

The passes are given in memory of the late Bertha Hammen, a resident of Pittsfield from 1951 to 1996, and the holder of the Boston Post Cane.  Mrs. Hammen passed away September 28, 2008 at the age of 109, at the Merrimack County Nursing Home, where she had lived for the last several years.  Ms. Hammen was a space travel enthusiast, had visited the planetarium on more than one occasion, and had the opportunity to meet an astronaut on her first visit there.

The passes, valid for up to $26.00 toward admission to the planetarium, are available to registered patrons of the library at no cost. Visit the library on 41 Main Street Pittsfield or call (603) 435-8406, for more information.

Parenting DVDs Donated to the Carpenter Library

Recognizing that all families need support, and parenting is one tough job, the NH Children’s Trust Fund and it partner sponsor, Merrimack County Savings Bank Foundation have donated a 12 DVD I am Your Child series to the library.  The series offers important information about managing day-to-day stress, child behavior, development, fitness and nutrition.  The new DVDs are located with the children’s/family movies near the children’s room.

The New Hampshire State Library has expanded the Internet database subscriptions which they purchase for the use of all the state’s citizens.   HeritageQuest Online has been added to Ancestry Library Edition to provide expanded resources for people interested in genealogy and history research.  You can access HeritageQuest Online.  The username for citizens of Pittsfield is “0C3K24K67C7”, the password is “welcome”.

In addition the complete Internet archives, and current issues, of the Concord Monitor have been added to those of the Union Leader through the Newsbank database.  Both newspapers and the remaining research databases are most easily accessed through the Pittsfield Middle High School website, in the academic resources section.

If you have any questions, or would like full descriptions of the databases, just ask during your next visit to the library.

Programs

Story hour for children and their parents/caregivers is held at 10:00 AM on Thursdays during the school year.  Come and join us - we read books, sing songs, play games and make crafts.  Each story ends at about 11:00 AM.

Help Wanted!

The Library needs volunteer workers who can give 2 or 3 hours at a time on a regular basis. Contact the librarian if you are interested in helping.
