Pittsfield Fire Department Explorer Post

Are You Between the Ages of 14 and 18?

We Welcome You to Join Us!

The Pittsfield Fire Department offers a great opportunity for young men and women who have completed the eighth grade and are between the ages of 14 and 18. That opportunity is to join and become part of its Fire Service Explorer Post.  Learn some new skills, make some new friends, be a part of a team, and help serve your community!

Fire Service Exploring is a worksite-based program developed through the Boy Scouts of America.  Fire Service Explorer Posts help youth gain insight into a variety of programs that offer hands-on career activities.  For young men and women who are interested in careers in the field of fire service, or becoming volunteer members of the Fire Department upon their 18th birthday, Exploring offers experiential learning with lots of fun-filled, hands-on activities that promote the growth and development of adolescent youth. Exploring programs are based on five areas of emphasis: career and volunteer opportunities, life skills, citizenship, character education, and leadership experience.

Here in Pittsfield, members of the Explorers Post have been involved with varied activities over the past year, along with their regular meetings and trainings.  Activities have included assisting with Fire Prevention Week programs, and holding some fund raising events throughout the year to raise money for educational materials and firefighting clothing, including a pancake breakfast.  The Explorer Post has been very active in regular department trainings.  Along with their trainings, the Explorers also participate in many fire station duties, such as washing the apparatus, sweeping the floors and conducting tests of the emergency doors and lights.  The Explorers often assist with community event coverage and also represent the Town by participating in parades throughout the area.

Explorers are also allowed to ride-along on Fire and EMS calls.  Those Explorers who have completed CPR, can apply for a NH EMS Apprentice license to allow them to assist with patient care.  Explorers are also allowed to ride on fire calls.  Explorers typically assist the engineer and get tools for the firefighters.

Since the beginning of the year, the Explorers have been involved with instruction during each training.  Each Explorer is assigned to one training.  This is on a trial basis, and so far has gone over well.  We believe in the theory that you learn more by teaching.  Some of the trainings they are responsible for:

  • Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)

  • Self-Contained Breathing Apparatus (SCBA)

  • SCBA Practical

  • Fire Hose

  • Vital Signs / Rehab

  • Hand Tools

  • Bandaging

  • Thermal Imaging Camera

  • Forestry Operation

  • Portable Extinguishers

The Pittsfield Explorers Post meets every Thursday nights from 6 to 8pm, with trainings on fire service responsibilities being regularly conducted.  Through the program, pertinent introductory fire service skills are taught and teamwork is developed.

The Pittsfield Explorers Post is directed by FF/ EMT Jim Girard with the assistance and guidance of Lt. Nick Abell.  For more information, please call the station at 435-6807, or join us at a meeting on Thursday night.  New members are encouraged to join at anytime throughout the year.
